So how was it for you? We hope the turkey (or nut roast) was perfectly cooked; the Christmas pudding (or panettone) was deliciously moist; the children (or husbands) haven’t got bored of all their presents yet and the cat (or guinea pigs) didn’t pull the tree over!
So, have you relented and decided to throw a New Years Eve bash? If so, have a quick look at the Party Ark site as you can get all your disposable partyware (less washing up, phew!!), light up the room with these fun sparklers and spell out the new year with our giant silver and gold balloons.
So which famous people were born on New Year’s Day? It’s actually a remarkably unpopular day for being born on; in fact we were hard-pressed to come up with anyone remotely famous (unless you count Jonas Armstrong who was Robin Hood, and whom you can soon see as ‘Bill’ in next year’s Rage of the Yeti.) New Year’s day is also the annivesary of the very last gladiator contest in ancient Rome. On this occasion the unfortunate Telemachus tried to put a stop to the proceedings, and (because intervening in a fight between men with choppers is generally a bad idea) he came to an untimely end. However, it did cause the authorities to decide that gladiating was de trop, until the tradition was restarted by ITV in the 1990s.
Now you’ve probably never heard of the playwright Elkanah Settle (another New Yea’s day birth) but we can assure you his Empress of Morocco is really very good and was very popular in its time (1673). Sadly, Elkanah peaked early and was not able to reproduce his early success; in his old age he kept a booth at Bartholomew Fair where, dressed in a green leather dragon suit he performed in a play of his own creation. We like to think those who saw it never forgot it.
